"Legacy is not what you leave behind, it is what others take away from you...My most important memory or what I am taking away from you is the strong will you have combined with the personal touch..." Jack L. Whitlin

Legacy is not what you leave behind, it is what others take away from you. When you are young, legacy is not understood -- not important -- not even thought of. When you get older, it is all that matters.

My most important memory or what I am taking away from you is the strong will you have combined with the personal touch. Remembering the names of everyone and some personal fact makes each of your congregants feel special.

Above all, you have shown special attention to my parents, Mort and Fern Witlin. Your special notes and calls have truly bound them to the Congregation and in many ways to continuing their Jewish faith. Those notes or calls are the greatest gift you could ever give me.

This lesson has been invaluable to me. I try every week to write -- not email -- but rather write notes, clip articles, etc. to many who are in our growing staff of nearly 10,000 at Deloitte Consulting or others I have met along life's journey. What I get back is immeasurable.

Everyone today seems to ask -- what is in it for me? What you have demonstrated is that if you put more in than you ever expect to take out, you won't be disappointed. In fact, you will be enriched.

Thanks for your caring, remembering, and above all the respect you have shown my parents over the years.
